Not two years after Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on Houston, the city is bouncing back with progress to make the city’s public spaces better than ever. Buffalo Bayou Park, a sprawling green space designed by SWA Group, has been named a finalist for the 2019 Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence.

The prestigious nomination is a major hurdle cleared for the park and process; Buffalo Bayou Park is now in the running to win a gold medal and the $50,000 prize that goes with it, or the silver medal and a $10,000 prize. The awards could go toward expanding and updating the park’s projects, to continue beautifying the space for the public. According to a statement by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and SWA Group, the park was nominated because of its “enhancement of a historic waterway into a resilient public green space.”

Also nominated were sites in Sulpher Springs, Texas; Memphis, Tennessee; Lynn, Massachusetts; and New Orleans, Louisiana. Next month, staffers from the committee will begin conducting site visits to each park and will announce the winners this June.

“Buffalo Bayou Partnership extends our congratulations to the park designers and consultants as well as our sincerest thanks to the Kinder Foundation for its catalyst gift and to all of the generous funders that made Buffalo Bayou Park possible,” read a statement from the park.
